Cherry Facts
Cherries are not only delightfully tasty, but also pack an impressive nutritional punch. These vibrant red fruits are rich in potent antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds like anthocyanins, which give cherries their deep red hue. Eating cherries may help reduce risk factors for chronic diseases such as arthritis, diabetes, and heart disease. Cherries also contain melatonin, a hormone that helps regulate sleep cycles, so snacking on cherries in the evening could potentially improve sleep quality. In addition to the health benefits, cherries are incredibly versatile in cooking – they can be enjoyed fresh, baked into pies and cobblers, churned into ice cream, or dried for a sweet and chewy treat. With several thousand varieties of cherries grown around the world, ranging from sweet Bing cherries to tart Montmorency cherries, there’s a cherry out there to suit every taste preference. Next time you spot cherries at the farmer’s market or grocery store, grab a bag and savor the burst of flavor and goodness packed into each bite of this remarkable fruit.
